I love the fluency interviews, but am finding them to be a little time-consuming. As an interventionist, I see small groups of students throughout the day. I prep the fluency rubric sheet for each student the day before and plan an activity that the other students can work on independently while I am interviewing students. (Using a math app on the iPads works great!)
In a general classroom, I can see the benefit of screening the students first. Instead of a paper timed test, I would use an internet program like xtra Math or Moby Max. (There are many other good, free fact programs.) Students who do well on those have no need for a fluency interview. Those who struggle could be given fluency interviews to pinpoint where they are at in their fluency development. Do they understand the concept of the operation? Can they employ some strategies to help them find an answer?
